Stonecrop Gardens: Cold Spring’s Hidden Fall Gem

New Yorkers, I know it’s August, but if you’re like me, you try to plan your Upstate weekends as early as possible— and this Cold Spring hidden gem is a must this autumn.

Last year, my parents were visiting from Texas at the beginning of October, and I told them we absolutely had to take the Metro North to Upstate New York to see the autumn trees, pick apples, and eat every last apple cider donut in sight.

My mom is the best researcher you'll find when it comes to planning a vacation — she was looking for easy things to walk (my parents are not hiking friendly) near Cold Spring and she found Stonecrop Gardens. The second we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat.

I'm not sure why we associate flowers with spring, because some of the best blooms near and in New York City are always bursting in fall. For years I've gone to Cold Spring in autumn to hike the trails and inhale the slow, golden death of the leaves and trees, but I had no idea Stonecrop Gardens existed — or how easy it is to grab an Uber there for a quick visit.

What Is Stonecrop Gardens?

New York State is full of old manors and grounds, and Stonecrop is one of them — a former private estate that's now also home to a School of Practical Horticulture. It's a quieter, less-photographed alternative to the bigger-name Hudson Valley gardens, which is exactly what makes it feel like a discovery.

Tickets, Hours & What to Know Before You Go

At a glance:

- Location: Cold Spring, NY (Hudson Valley)

- Tickets: $10

- Booking: Recommended in advance, required on weekends

- Getting there: Uber or taxi from the Cold Spring Metro North station — just a few minutes

- Photography: Written consent is required in advance for any professional photo shoots on the grounds

If you're scrolling through these photos and thinking about booking a shoot here — a couple's session, an editorial, anything professional — reach out to Stonecrop directly first. They do require written permission before you shoot. And if you’re looking for a photographer who lives right off the Metro North and has been to Stonecrop before, I recommend this gal, she works mostly with couples, weddings, and branding (Spoiler Alert: It’s me, I’m recommending you book me, I’m a professional photographer who lives in NYC!)

What to Do Once You're There

Take your time. Slowly wind through the garden paths, grab a drink at the on-site cafe, and just sit in the stillness. Or better — stand among the flowers, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. To a New Yorker, there's nothing quite like a big gulp of fresh air.

Bring a book to read or spend intentional time being still.

Where to Eat & Shop in Cold Spring

In case you want to make a whole day of Cold Spring, here’s how I would do it:

Grab a coffee and some breakfast, take a hike early in the morning. Save some time after your hike for the little shops along Main Street, and if you can, get a reservation at Le Bouchon — the food was great, and after a morning outdoors, sitting outside for lunch is the right way to spend lunch. After lunch, take an uber or lyft to Stonecrop.

7 Tips for Taking Metro North to Any Town Upstate

1. Leave as early as you can. You'll beat both the crowds and the busiest trains heading upstate.

2. Hike first, lunch second. Get your hike in early so you can beat everyone else to the restaurants. Make a reservation if you can, or aim to arrive 30 minutes before they open — breakfast and lunch spots fill up fast.

3. Take an early train back, unless you plan to spend the whole day there. It's your best shot at actually getting a seat — or getting on the train at all. Some trains fill up completely and you'll be waiting for the next one. I've stood smooshed between friends the entire ride back to Manhattan more than once.

4. Use any public bathroom you find, whenever you find it. Lines near the train station can run 30–60 minutes depending on time and location, and the bathrooms on the train aren't always reliable during busy hours.

5. Coffee before you leave Grand Central, baked good once you're upstate. A little something in your stomach makes for a better start to a long day.

6. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Even a "non-hiking" day upstate involves more walking than you'd expect.

7. Check the weather for your specific destination before you go. It's often noticeably colder upstate than it is in the city.
